GENERAL INFORMATION

Ukraine is Europe. The capital, Kiev, is only 2,5 hours flying time from the main capitals in Europe. Ukraine is the second largest country of Europe ( after the Russian Federation) and has an extremely lively and eventful history that dates back fifteen hundred years.

And still this country is so unknown to many of us. Ukraine in its past has been part of several countries: for instance the Austrian – Hungarian empire, Romania, Poland, Turkey and of course Russia. Ukraine has had also short periods of independency and became again an independent country after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Ukraine is often called «borderland» as it has been for many centuries the border between several countries that were all eager to incorporate this fertile part of Europe. Power changes in Europe often reshuffled existing borders and brought in new powers.

Religion also played an important role in the identity of Ukraine and only slowly Ukraine managed to develop its own identity as we see it today.

Ukraine has at present around 42 million inhabitants and is still the major exporter of agricultural products in Europe. It also has a very large arsenal of heavy industries, mainly situated in the South Eastern part of the country.

The population in Ukraine is European oriented and English is spoken by most younger citizens. Most of us know Ukraine as “the land of the black soil”, as exporter of wheat, sunflower seeds and edible oils. But Ukraine is much and much more.

The religion in Ukraine is in majority Russian Orthodox, which has over the centuries resulted in many beautiful churches, monasteries and other landmarks. Recently the Ukraine catholic church has joined the Turkish Orthodox church, which might also be a political motivated decision.

Ukraine has several large cities, such as: Kiev, L’viv, Odessa, Charkow, Dnjepropetovsk, Zapororizja. In the Western part of Ukraine we find the beautiful Carpathians and Western Ukraine borders mainly to Poland and Romania. The North and East border to the Russian Federation and the South of the country to the sub tropical Black Sea.

Since 2014 Ukraine is involved in a serious conflict about Crimea with the Russian Federation. This conflict has spread out, unfortunately, to parts of the South — eastern part of Ukraine with the cities of Donetsk and Lugansk as its centre. This conflict seems to be “frozen” and a solution is difficult to find. It is at present very much a local conflict though, and the present president of Ukraine seems to be in a much better position to solve the conflict with The Russian Federation than the former president was.

Fortunately, the country does not suffer at present too much from the conflict and the international interest for Ukraine is growing again which has resulted in an augmented economy and a dramatically sinking inflation.

And it has also resulted in a boost of touristic activities throughout the country together with a firm interest of Western businessmen.

Tourism is a leading target for the present president and there are substantial measures taken to facilitate the tourist industry. Ukraine has always been a safe country to travel to and the friendliness of the population guarantees a good and very interesting stay.
